Simplicity in Complexity: Binary Code and Yin, Yang

ID-10080601“Anyone who is familiar with computer language knows that all computer programs are written in binary code. There are only two symbols, 0 and 1. So no matter how complicated a program, it can still be broken into codes of 0 and 1. This is a good example to show that how simple components can be interwoven to create things of enormous complexity. Speaking at level of the universe, we can say that everything we know about in this universe is either matter or energy or a combination of both.”

“The symbols of Change are essentially the same as the binary code of contemporary Information Technology. Patterns of bits in a computer literally implement Yin and Yang in paths of silicon, where they are realized as Off and On. This is neither an accident nor a co-incidence. Binary encoding is the most fundamental method of representation, nothing is simpler. The insight of the ancient sages was to see this, and create a symbolic language of deep spiritual significance. Given that all significance comes from interpretation of the symbols in the mind, it is the abstract nature of the symbols that allows such a range of creative interpretation in the Yijing.” – http://www.yijing.co.uk/intro/yijing.html

No two of the products of creation are alike. From this we know that although the number of things is infinite, at bottom there is nothing without yin or yang [which differentiate them]. From this we know also that the transformations and changes in the universe are due to these two fundamental forces. –  Chang Tsai

If yin and yang do not exist, the One (the Great Ultimate) can not be revealed. If the One cannot be revealed, then the function of the two forces will cease. Reality and unreality, motion and rest, integration and disintegration, and clearness and turbidity are two different substances. In the final analysis, however, they are one. –  Chang Tsai
